Communion for "Remarried Divorcees": "Eucharist Not a Superstitious Rite – Outside State of Grace, Not Only Useless, But Sacrilegious."

Catechism Lesson (1890)

"From the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female. For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother; and shall cleave to his wife. And they two shall be in one flesh. Therefore now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder." And in the house again his disciples asked him concerning the same thing.

And he saith to them: "Whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if the wife shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery."

Poverty and Simplicity at the Heart of Catholic Tradition

Poverty and simplicity - Low Mass at side altar, Fontgombault Abbey
The Italian Traditional Catholic blog, Cordialiter, could never be accused of not supporting or understanding the Catholic Tradition and what it means for us today.  Its “banner” is a quote from Saint Pius X, from his Apostolic Letter “Nôtre Charge Apostolique”:  “The true friends of the people are not the revolutionaries nor the innovators, but the traditionalists.”  A recent post apparently caused quite a reaction from the readers of the blog, so much so that the author felt the need to issue a clarification.  I think important issues are raised in the post and the clarification. My translation of the post and the clarification from Italian is as follows.  My comments are below.

10-year anniversary of the death of a legend

Today marks the 10-year anniversary of the death of Michael Davies. For those who have been in the traditional movement for decades, this legend of the fight for restoration needs no introduction. For those who are new to tradition, you may have no idea what this man means for you today, unless you read an account of his life and tireless work on behalf of the Church.
We bring you on this day this special piece that ran in The Remnant years ago -- a paper for which Mr. Davies wrote extensively. The article is written by Editor Michael Matt, who knew and loved Mr. Davies deeply.
Please read this and pray for the repose of the soul of Michael Davies.

Cardinals Ouellet and Scola: More opposition to the revisionism of Cardinal Kasper

Luca Giordano
The Marriage of the Virgin
Musée du Louvre

In the latest issue of Communio, the theological journal founded by Joseph Ratzinger, Hans Urs von Balthasar and Henri de Lubac, two Cardinals of the Church, whose theological credentials are well-known, directly counter the position of Cardinal Kasper with respect to Catholic teaching on marriage and pastoral practice dealing with the question of reception of Holy Communion by those divorced and remarried.  Both articles can be downloaded from the Communio site.  Ouellet and Scola join the strong chorus of support for the Church’s traditional teaching on Marriage and her pastoral practice, among which we can cite as fine examples the Dominican theologians’ response in Nova et Vetera and the collection of essays, Remaining in the Truth of Christ, about to be published by Ignatius Press.

One of the wisest clerics in the traditional Catholic world, Father Claude Barthe, wrote a short note for the highly regarded French Catholic periodical L'Homme Nouveau on the Holy See communiqué on the meeting between Cardinal Müller and Bishop Fellay yesterday. He paid attention to the key words, as well as to words that are missing, and how they represent a high point in the evolution of relations between the Apostolic See and the Society of Saint Pius X.

Father Barthe, by the way, is the main chaplain of the remarkable Populus Summorum Pontificum pilgrimage to Rome, taking place a month from now -- if you can, please join it, there's still time.

A Highly Troubling Sign: How Cupich was Chosen for Chicago

a guest-post by Fr. Pio Pace

It is very necessary to understand the full measure of the nomination of the extreme liberal bishop Blase Cupich to the see of Chicago, replacing Cardinal Francis George.

Cupich's promotion to this particularly important position, that usually entails the elevation to the cardinalatial red, was a personal decision of Pope Francis himself. More precisely, the Pope imposed his candidate on Cardinal Ouellet and the Congregation for Bishops, under the desperate suggestion of the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, Abp. Carlo Maria Viganò. We know well that those men who are particularly authoritarian, such as Francis, also are, in many cases, easily manipulated by those who learn how to read them. Moreover, it is enough to waggle before the eyes of the Pope the scarecrow called Cardinal Burke to lead him in one direction or another, because he has kept against the Prefect of the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura an extremely strong rancor after the 2013 conclave, in which the American Cardinal was one of those who tried to thwart his path to the pontificate.

Converted by the World

In the following words from Vol. I of The Three Ages of the Interior Life, first published in 1938, Fr. Garrigou Lagrange, O.P. speaks of Modernism and Americanism as things of the past, but sadly the errors that he described are quite common today.

Time to stop denying the obvious.

As reported by the Associated Press and a growing number of secular media outlets, the appointment of the Bishop of Spokane, Blase Cupich, 65, as the next Archbishop of Chicago is set to be formally announced by Rome.

It is worth noting that the "National Catholic Reporter" is celebrating the appointment of this "good model for how bishops should conduct themselves in the public square" with an article (to which we will not link here) based on the very real actions and tone that he set as Bishop of Spokane -- on the issues of homosexual "marriage", on evangelization, on Obamacare (the system as implemented, with all its anti-faith inclusions), on "lay ministry" and, most importantly, on the upcoming Synod of Bishops.

Not a single priest was ordained for Antwerp in 2012, 2013, or 2014

As we have mentioned before, the 'progressive' bishop of Antwerp, H.E. Johan Bonny, has published an open letter in several languages on his expectations for the coming Synod of Bishops. Bonny thinks that with the Encyclical Humanae Vitae, Pope Paul VI derailed the Church from the collegial, progressive course set by the Council, but he seems to hope that now the time has come to set things back on course. In his letter he uses many of the clichés of those who dissented from Humanae Vitae to argue for a new approach to the matter of 'divorced and remarried.'

Michael Davies – “A Writer to Cherish”
Leo Darroch*
Michael Treharne Davies was born on 13th March 1936.  His father, a Welshman, was a Baptist and his mother, who was English, was a member of the Church of England. On leaving school in 1954 at the age of eighteen he joined the British Army as a regular soldier and served in Malaya, Egypt, and Cyprus. There is one comment in his army service records that is of particular interest.  In August 1957 his commanding officer stated that,

"God doesn't need us."

If you ever read something like this, do not fall for it. It simply is not true: while He certainly doesn't need us for His own Eternal Existence, He needs us to save us, and He chose it to be this way. We certainly cannot do it ourselves, and the complex paths of God's grace must prompt us towards Him and Redemption bought by the Blood of His Son, but to simply declare "He doesn't need us" is a grievous mistake. Saint Augustine explained it well in a well-known sermon passage ("God created us without us: but he did not will to save us without us"), but happily enough, the concept is explained more extensively and in an even more passionate manner by Saint Catherine of Siena in the sweet words of her Tuscan language, as she addresses God Almighty:

I know well that mercy is Your own attribute, wherefore You can not destroy it or refuse it to him who asks for it. Your servants knock at the door of Your truth, because in the truth of Your only-begotten Son they know the ineffable love which You have for man, wherefore the fire of Your love ought not and cannot refrain from opening to him who knocks with perseverance.

- Kasper, in Interview: "Everything was agreed with the Pope."

"If only Cardinal Kasper had been alive to provide
a 'pastoral solution' to the King's Great Matter !"

The shamelessness of Cardinal Walter Kasper is astonishing. After throwing an ideological nuclear bomb in the February 2014 Consistory of Cardinals, with a pronouncement filled with historical and doctrinal falsehoods to justify a joint attack on the dogma of the indissolubility of marriage, on Penance, and on the integrity of the Blessed Sacrament, in an interview published today he now pretends that, with the release of the book of the Cardinals (and other pronouncements by other Cardinals, including Cardinal Pell), he is the victim of "an ideological war," and that the real "target" of criticisms directed at him is Pope Francis. Therefore, he says other cardinals cannot criticize him because, in effect, he is merely speaking for the Pope on this matter. The destroyer and attacker claims victimhood status!...

Pope Francis is Irritated -- with a Pro-Marriage Book Published by Ignatius Press

A new book with articles by prominent churchmen is about to be released worldwide in several languages (in English by Ignatius Press, under the title "Remaining in the Truth of Christ"), with important articles strongly defending all aspects related to the traditional Catholic doctrine on family and marriage, and the integrity of Blessed Sacrament, words that come from Our Lord Himself. This is how Ignatius Press describes it:

A Letter from a Reader: “It’s so refreshing to be able to let go of useless baggage from recent decades”

St. Josemaría Escrivá (Oct. 2, 1968)
One of the most interesting and gratifying aspects of carrying out an apostolate of writing is the letters received from readers, conveying a wide range of observations and questions, difficulties and disagreements, suggestions and requests. Occasionally I receive a letter of such superlative quality or penetrating insight that I feel it ought to be shared with readers.

What follows is one such letter, whose sender gave me permission to post it anonymously. It is in many ways a sad reflection on our times, and yet it has the virtue of eloquently expressing the growing awareness among Catholics of the abysmal failure of churchmen to address the real problems facing the Church today—problems that handicap and tranquilize the dreamt-of New Evangelization before it can even get off the starting blocks.

Here, then, is the letter. I reproduce it without comment.

Original Sins: Eucharistic Prayer II - composed in a few hours in a Roman Trattoria

Perfect for "a banal on-the-spot product"
The unbelievable scene is not unknown, it has been mentioned elsewhere before, but now confirmed in the published recollections of one of the two men involved: during the mad rush to have the Novus Ordo Missae (the New Mass of Paul VI)  ready as soon as possible, the Consilium, the 1963-1970 organization charged with the upheaval and destruction of the Roman Rite under the guise of "reform" and under the control mostly of Archbishop Annibale Bugnini, had reached a new level of ignominy in composing a new "canon". The draft was so bad and dangerous that the new Eucharistic Prayer had to be rewritten in a hurry and at the last minute during a late-night meeting by two men in a Roman restaurant.

'Anything that divides must be cut away': the TLM ends in Blackfen
- I come to bury the Mass, not to praise it -

From an English correspondent:
A broken Rosary...
Rorate readers will by now know the sad fate of the parish of Our Lady of the Rosary in Blackfen, in the south east of Greater London. With the blogging priest Fr Timothy Finigan as pastor, the parish had become famous as a centre for the Traditional liturgy. On the second Sunday of his successor, Fr Steven Fisher, it was announced that the Traditional Mass would no longer be celebrated in the parish, effective from the end of the month.

In order to understand this event, readers need to bear in mind a number of facts. One is the poisonous article on the parish in 2009, which appeared in the Tablet, the British liberal Catholic weekly. In this a number of long-standing liberal dissidents who, unfortunately for the parish, live within its boundaries, queued up to attack Fr Finigan for introducing the Traditional Mass into the parish schedule: despite the fact that three of the four Sunday celebrations continued to be the Novus Ordo. They were led by Bernard Wynne, quoted in the Tablet article, a leading member of ‘Advent Group’, which campaigns against priestly celibacy, ‘Catholics for a Changing Church’, founded to oppose Humanae Vitae, and the more recently formed ‘Stand Up for Vatican II’. When people like Bernard Wynne stir up problems in a parish, periodicals like the Tablet can always be found to blame the priest for being too orthodox and the other laity for being attached to the Traditional Mass. The article has left a cloud of suspicion hanging over the parish among the establishment liberals who allow their prejudices to be formed by the Tablet.

III - My Pastor is Now Addicted to "Who am I to judge?" -- Now what?

Dear Father,

I'm somewhat confused by a pastor, who used to be very conservative until two years ago, but who's been recently using, 'Who am I to judge?' often in his sermons, criticizing those 'who judge,' in his words. Now, when he's criticizing those whom he sees as 'judgmental', isn't he himself judging? So, isn't there some level of contradiction in this sentence, this fear of 'judgment' being used to...well, 'judge' others, as 'judgmental', 'hypocrites', 'pharisees', etc?

Difficulties are not always bad for us; they are certainly not in essence evil. This is true for the spiritual life and is particularly true for the life of the Church. There is only one evil: losing Christ and His grace. Evil is eternal damnation, not suffering.

We are so immersed in the pagan mentality of this world, that we are no longer aware that we think the same way as it does. Too often we think that suffering is evil and what is worse, we judge the goodness of things, the rightness of our decisions and the work we begin, on whether they give us peace and serenity. If they don’t cause us suffering, then these things are good for us.

This way of thinking and weighing things is as far away from Christianity as you can imagine. It is in practice, a rejection of the Cross of Christ. This is true about everything, even for the return to Tradition and the Old Mass.

In the years after the promulgation of the Motu Proprio, Summorum Pontificum, in which His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI stated openly that the Traditional Mass had never been abolished and gave faculty to priests to once again celebrate it, after it came into effect in September seven years ago, many were so intimidated by the resistance put up by the diocesan curias against the return of Tradition in the Church, that they surrendered right from the beginning - in that which should have been a “glorious battle.”

Chesterton: Is War Irrational -- or is Pacifism Feverish?

The Peace Fever
Gilbert Keith Chesterton
May 29, 1915
It is customary to talk about the war fever, but in those who still exhibit it, the peace fever is much more feverish. With these people peace is not as much a prejudice as a mania.

There is said to be a sort of person in the lunatic asylums who thinks he is a chicken. But even he is only somewhat exaggerating his legitimate claim to know his own business best. He is too modest to commit himself to the proposition that all human beings are chickens. That, however, is very much the proposition to which the extreme Pacifist commits himself: for he really talks of man as if he were talking of some other animal; as if a naturalist were to class men with poultry merely because they have two legs. Legs can be used for other purposes than that of running away; and man's highest moral and mental powers can be used for other purposes than that of keeping the peace. Mere Pacifism has in this crisis [World War I] failed fully to support anything or anybody, even its own best exponents, and that for a perfectly simple reason: that mere Pacifism is morally wrong. Mere peace does not fill the heart; it does not satisfy the conscience or even the affections. I have heard of a person having the highly unpleasant accomplishment of being able to stop his heart from beating; and men of a generous and civilised breed can only reject the case for just anger and battle by an artificial stoppage of the heart.

Shock with the appointment of Danneels to a Synod on the Family - and the memories of a 2010 tape

It is a relief to see that the Liberal Supremo of the Americanist Church, Jesuit Thomas Reese, is "disappointed" with the "composition" of members of the upcoming Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. The problem, of course, is that, since "Progressives" are unimpeded by shame or any qualms of conscience (let us call it the Modernist Taqiyya*), we never know if they mean what they say, or if they mean something quite different and just wish to gain new ground. For instance, Reese's ideas are certainly over-represented in the Synod by such luminaries as Kasper or Danneels, but he may still wish to paint the membership of the Synod as "too conservative" just to advance Modernist ideas.

Which, of course, brings to mind the very presence of Danneels, the emeritus of Mechlin-Brussels: Danneels was directly responsible for the abuse of the spirit of Catholic children in Belgium during decades, against the crying pleas of Belgian parents (shocking report), and was naturally quite happy to support "homosexual marriage" just last year. And yet he is a pontifical appointee (the second in the list of pontifical appointees) of a Synod on the Family, when his only family expertise is on the destruction of children, marriage, and family.

It's not always that an abuser-protector is caught on tape, but that happened to Danneels in 2010, when the case of his major protégé, the man he had most wanted as his successor as the Primate of Belgium, Roger Vangheluwe, Bishop of Bruges, was about to be exposed. Vangheluwe was the typical Danneels-bishop, and, unsurprisingly, he had a past filled with abuse -- and not just any kind of abuse, but that of his own nephew, during 13 years in the post-Conciliar years. (By the way, Danneels' new favorite pupil, Bishop Bonny of Antwerp, is angling for Mechlin-Brussels as well, even going to the lengths of making a personal letter on the Synod available in several languages.)

After Danneels had been replaced at the helm of the Belgian Church by a serious prelate, Archbishop Léonard, the latter made a strong speech on the shame of child abuse by priests, and the need for victims to end their silence. Encouraged by this message, four days after Léonard's brave speech, the Vangheluwe family was led to believe they would meet Léonard, who might encourage them. Instead, they were tricked into meeting Danneels, who tried to coerce them into keeping silence to protect his favorite pupil.

What Danneels didn't know was that the meeting, on April 8, 2010, was being taped, and Flemish paper De Standaard would publish the dialogue soon afterwards. Let's go to the scene as provided by La Vie at the time:
